Newcomers: Gentrification and Its Discontents, Author in Conversation
December 7, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pmFree
Join us for an engaging conversation between Award-winning journalist Matthew L. Schuerman and Ernest Brown!
Matthew L. Schuerman blends explorations of policy decisions with detailed narratives of developers, activists, and public officials to explain how gentrification became such a contested phenomenon, in his new book, ” Newcomers: Gentrification and Its Discontents”, from the University of Chicago Press. He focuses on three cities—New York, Chicago, and San Francisco—and hones in on the past and present of the Mission District in particular. Kirkus Reviews called Newcomers “illuminating ” and “informed,” and said, “The author humanizes the community transformations so that readers who have never set foot in those locales—and even those who know them personally—fully comprehend the dynamics involved.”
Matthew L. Schuerman is a senior editor at WNYC public radio in New York. His coverage of urban issues has appeared in The New York Times, The Village Voice and The New York Observer. For more information, visit matthewschuerman.com.
