SUMMARY:Engaging Elders in Climate Action
DESCRIPTION:Automated | AI captioning will be provided at this event. \nRSVP: Engaging Elders Bill McKibben Presentation\nSend Email: info@ashbyvillage.org\n\nJoin Ashby Village Elder Action & Village Movement California for this Climate Action Event \n\nSince 1989\, with his bestseller The End of Nature\, New Yorker writer and climate visionary Bill McKibben has been at the forefront of inspiring climate action. In 2008\, along with university students and friends\, he co-founded 350.org\, now a grassroots global network mobilizing millions of young people in the existential crisis of our lifetimes: the survival of humanity.\n\nSo far\, it’s been mostly young people who’ve spoken out about the climate crisis. But recently\, McKibben has focused on engaging an older generation of Americans that might help tip the balance in time. \n\nThe good news? It’s OUR generation! As he and his colleague Akaya Windwood recently wrote in an Los Angeles Times op-ed\, it’s time for us to step up to seek an impact on climate via Third Act\, a new national network of elders supporting younger activists. Ashby Village’s Elder Action has been invited to become a founding partner. \n\nOn Sunday\, January 9\, 2022\, from 2-4PM PST\, Bill McKibben will make the next presentation for our Ashby Village Arts & Culture Series about Third Act\, co-sponsored by Village Movement California\, the statewide association of California Villages. He promises to inform us how to tap our strengths— our experience\, networks\, time\, and wisdom—for our most valuable legacy: protecting the future of our children\, grandchildren and the human species. \n\nPlease join us to learn what we can do together about the climate crisis—and to acquaint Bill McKibben with our Villages and what we can bring to Third Act. You may never attend a more compelling or hopeful presentation! \nZoom Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86710807483

SUMMARY:Sign the Petition | Protecting Our Democracy Act
DESCRIPTION:It’s been one year since the attack on our Capitol\, and mounting evidence suggests a number of elected Republicans helped plan\, promote\, and excuse Jan. 6. The congressional commission continues their efforts to understand the attack and prevent it from happening again. But they’ve been continually stonewalled by Trump’s allies who refuse congressional subpoenas\, claiming executive privilege. \nPresidents invoking executive privilege to skirt responsibility for their actions is not a new phenomenon. It happened in 1792 when George Washington refused to supply Congress with documents related to a military campaign against Native Americans. It happened during the investigation into the Watergate break-in when Richard Nixon invoked executive privilege six times. And it’s happening now as former President Donald Trump’s allies continue to refuse subpoenas from the January 6 commission. \nSign and send the petition to the Senate: Pass the Protecting Our Democracy Act! \nJust as Congress did after Watergate\, we must again enact new laws and reforms to strengthen our democratic institutions against future presidents – both Democrats and Republicans – who seek to undermine them. We must restore faith in the U.S. government and institutions. These reforms shouldn’t be partisan or controversial\, and many of the proposals have had bipartisan support in the past. \nThe bill will prevent presidential abuses by: \n\npreventing abuse of ardon power;\nensuring no president is above the law;\nand enforcing the Foreign and Domestic Emoluments Clauses of the Constitution.\n\nThe bill will also strengthen accountability and transparency by: \n\nenforcing congressional subpoenas;\nreasserting congressional power of the purse;\nstrengthening congressional oversight of presidential emergency declarations;\nand protecting whistleblowers and inspector general independence.\n\nNo matter their party\, no president should be above the law. Sign and send the petition to the Senate: Pass the Protecting Our Democracy Act!

SUMMARY:Petition: We Need a Wealth Tax Now\, More than Ever
DESCRIPTION:In the United States alone\, billionaires reportedly added $1 trillion to their collective wealth since the start of the pandemic. \nTen billionaires made enough money in the pandemic to cover the cost of coronavirus vaccinations for the entire world\, with funds leftover. \nMeanwhile\, the rest of us have been devastated by rising unemployment and an inability to pay rent or mortgage payments. \nAnd our social safety net has proven woefully inadequate. \nAt the link below\, sign the petition to Congress: We need a wealth tax now\, more than ever.

SUMMARY:Petition: To President Biden—Cancel at Least $50\,000 in Student Debt per Borrower
DESCRIPTION:Wiping out $10\,000 vs. $50\,000 of student debt is a question of whether Biden will help only 14 million people—or 36 million people. And it’s about reducing the student debt burden by $400 billion\, or $1 trillion. SUMMARY:1- 5 Steps; How To Complete Your Stop The Republican Recall Ballot
DESCRIPTION:Check your mailbox! Something important is coming –and no\, it’s not the results of your latest “add to cart” binge. \n“Republicans are abusing the recall process to try to grab power. I’m calling on Californians to vote No!” Elizabeth Warren \nMost Californians will receive their recall ballots in the next few days\, now more than ever we need help getting out the word about how to fill them out. \n\nTo defeat the recall and keep Governor Gavin Newsom on the job\, California Democrats should:\nVote No on the first question\nLeave the second question blank\nSign Your Ballot \n Mail it back.\n\nSimple as that. Can we count on you to sign up for a volunteer shift today? We need volunteers to call voters over the next few weeks and remind them to vote NO on the recall by September 14. \nBeating the Republican recall has to be all of our #1 priority over the next few weeks. A successful recall threatens to undo the important progress we’ve made as a state — protecting immigrants\, expanding access to health care\, fighting climate change\, and creating common-sense gun laws\, and so much more. The stakes are just too high. Thank you for joining the fight to keep California a blue state. \nVolunteer – https://www.mobilize.us/cadems/?emci=3bdf7bc6-d7fe-eb11-b563-501ac57b8fa7&emdi=81ea1a0c-e6fe-eb11-b563-501ac57b8fa7&ceid=126237 \nDonate – https://secure.actblue.com/donate/cdp-footer?refcode=footer&amount=5 \nOur Democratic leaders are working hard to make California a better place to live. SUMMARY:Reimagining Public Safety in Berkeley -Take The Survey-
DESCRIPTION:Help the City of Berkeley develop a new model of public safety that reflects the needs of our community by completing a brief online survey to inform a plan for restructuring the City of Berkeley’s approach to violence prevention\, crisis intervention\, policing\, and community safety. \nWe want to know what health and safety issues you’re most concerned about and what programs and services you see as key to community safety. \nComplete the survey online in English or Spanish by June 15. All responses are anonymous. \nThis survey is part of a larger effort to create a public safety paradigm in Berkeley that aims to continue Police Department work on violent and criminal matters and de-escalation while redirecting some funding currently spent on policing to violence prevention and diversion programs\, including those targeted on domestic violence\, youth outreach\, mental health\, crisis response\, substance abuse\, housing\, and homeless services\, and restorative justice. \nThis work is being guided by a task force of community stakeholders and supported by consultants from the National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform. Components of the Reimagining Public Safety initiative passed as an omnibus package by the City Council in the summer of 2020\, include: \n\na pilot program to reassign non-criminal police service calls to a team consisting of trained crisis-response workers (Specialized Care Unit)\ncreating a Department of Transportation to ensure a racial justice lens in enforcing parking regulations and traffic laws and in the development of transportation policy\, programs and infrastructure\naudits of 9-1-1 calls and the Police Department budget\n\nThe survey is one piece of a community engagement effort that also includes small group listening sessions\, stakeholder focus groups\, and a citywide town hall. Sign up for email updates to be notified of future engagement opportunities. \nThese efforts build on Berkeley’s longstanding commitment to creating a more equitable community and support the City’s Strategic Plan goals to “champion and demonstrate social and racial equity” and to “create a resilient\, safe\, connected\, and prepared City.”
